Jenny Brown lost a leg to bone cancer at age ten, and her only real companion through it was a cat. Years later, raised in a conservative Southern Baptist family in Kentucky, she made the connection between that bond and the farm animals raised for food, and found the courage to speak out.
In 2004 she and her husband founded Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary, home to a cast of rescued survivors, from a fugitive slaughterhouse cow to a three-legged goat and an abandoned Easter duckling.
Blending wry humor with unflinching honesty about the realities of industrial agriculture, Brown’s memoir became a touchstone for the animal-rights movement.
