U of L historian Tracy E. K’Meyer traces more than five decades of school desegregation fights in Louisville and Jefferson County, from the 1954 Brown decision through the 2007 Supreme Court ruling (Meredith v. Jefferson County) that overturned the district’s local integration plan.
Drawing on oral histories, newspaper accounts, and community records, the book follows the people who pushed for busing and diversity even as national opinion turned against school integration, and asks what’s owed to that effort as districts nationwide decide whether to keep it going.
