On March 27, 1890, a monster storm system swept the Ohio River Valley, spawning more than twenty-five tornados in a single day. The most destructive one tore through Louisville, cutting a path from Main Street to the edge of town. It destroyed nearly eight hundred buildings and killed more than a hundred people.
It remains the twenty-fifth deadliest tornado in U.S. history. Local author Keven McQueen chronicles the disaster and its aftermath, from harrowing rescues to the citywide rebuilding effort. The book restores a piece of Louisville history that had largely faded from memory.
