Louisville’s African-American community dates to the early 1800s, when churches like Quinn Chapel A.M.E. were founded well before the Civil War.
Historian Bruce M. Tyler gathers more than 200 vintage photographs tracing the community’s institution builders and pioneering families, among them Whitney M. Young, Woodford Porter, Frank Stanley, and Calvin Winstead, from the late 19th century through the 1960s.
Drawn from local churches, family collections, and the Patton Museum at Fort Knox, the images reflect struggle, triumph, and the family bonds that sustained a close-knit community across generations.
